This reminded me of visiting my Aunt Rita in 1977 in Florida. She made a point of telling me more than once how much she hated Anita Bryant and her "Save Our Children" crusade. Later when I told her I was gay, I asked her if she did that to make it easier for me to tell her. She said that she hadn't thought of that. she just wanted me to know that if I were gay, that I had her love and support. I have tears welling up just writing about this almost 50 years later.

I wish I had been able to find the courage to tell my parents when I was a young man. It just seemed to me that I could either be happy or be gay. Never thought that both paths could be the same. I’m glad I’m out now at 54.
